No it is neither a rule book nor a philosophically sound book. It also has never purported to be either.

There is the tale, true as it happens, of a scholar who, upon visiting civilizations, would read their sacred texts in order to understand them. He could find nothing of a religious nature in it, or not enough to matter compared to the other major religions.

It is a collection of witnessess, instructions, poems, songs, prayers, histories, political discussions, news events, prophecies, exhortations and so forth by different witnessess at different times. It hold contradictions within it that are extraordinary and defeat any claim of inerrancy. The most classic one is to take the resurrection accounts, lay them out side by side, and you will find 46 irreconcilable differences. They are irreconcilable because if one account is true, then the others must be false.

All that said, I remain a Christian at least in part because of that. It is only when you force the book to be a proof text as extreme Protestantism in particular does, that the faith community is reduced to absurdity.

Christianity is absurd.

God had a diaper rash?

He who cannot be contained was born in a cave?

Heaven moved from the etheral other to the womb of a woman?

The Creator was put on trial by His Creations (and lost I might add)?

The list goes on and on.

Glory to Jesus Christ! Glory to Him Forever!
