Phoebe is a healthy persian with an attitude. She doesn't have any urinary problems but keeps going on the couch and recently the guest futon. My husband and I cannot figure out what she is trying to tell us. I love her and don't want to get rid of her but if she doesn't stop we may have to. Help!

Well, here are a bunch of sites to check out that may have some help for you. Start out with How to stop a cat from urinating inappropriately, how to correct bad behavior, how to train to a litter box (if she was not already), tips on litter box training, and finally, how to remove cat urine from furniture!! Sorry about the mess -- hope this stuff helps. Many of these sites have more tips at the bottom, as well as links to other sites with products that will help or other tips and such. Hopefully you will find something that will work for you.
You may need to have a vet check her out to make sure there is not a systemic problem, although your statement that she does not have any urinary problems leads me to believe you may already have done this.

1 how are you sure about the urinary problems, has she been to the vet?
2 is she an only cat? if she is, she may just need a playmate. If she is not an only cat then how many litter pans do you have. Some cats want their own litter box ( and then use both anyway...lol)
3. This stinks but place moth balls (or crystals) on or near the furniture. I guess they will not pee near those things. Don't know why.
4. Make sure her litter box is always clean..some kitties are pickier than others when it comes to how much stuff they will tolerate in their box.

my cat was peeing and pooping on the carpet all of a sudden, so then I got her a new litter box (I didn't remove the old one), WITHOUT a hood (b/c cats don't like hoods), but with high walls so they don't "go" over the edge. I put the litter box near where she was going and filled it with SCENT-FREE litter. The problem immediately stopped. When she went in the box, I praised her and gave her a treat. Yelling and punishing didn't work, and that is what I've been told by others as well. Cats are like that.

I had this problem too. My kitty was about 4 months old when he started doing this; I called the vet and made an appointment to get him fixed. This did solve the problem, but they have to be very young in order to break them of this habit. Kitties urinate on your possessions because they are "marking" their territory, making it their own. They also make "spray" stuff you can buy at your pet store to spray these problematic areas and this will keep your kitty from spraying everything, but he/she will eventually find a "new" spot to spray.

You need to potty train it. If she keeps going on the couch, you need to yell to her no, and act like you're really upset with her. Then point to the litterbox, and push her rear end down on the litter box, this will help her know where she is actually supposed to go potty

there's a spray that'll stop it from going in specific spots, but... i don't know, change the cat litter more often?

the only thing to do thats humane is have it declwed and set it free nature will take her course
