You REALLY have to watch out for those cunning snakes that are more intelligent than other animals and can speak. Maybe God should have warned his children about talking snakes rather than simply letting them be conned. But I guess God must have wanted it to happen that way so he could punish all humans forever.
@ ThePesky Wabbit: Since the question, nor any of the answers so far mention apples, what point are you trying to make and why did you start talking about apples? Is this just a pointless bit of Bible trivia you have been desparate to share?
@ MrCool1978: You claim that God was testing mankind. How exactly was it a test? He already knew the outcome because He knows everything. Adam and Eve were merely acting in the exact way God has 'raised' them since they had no life experience and their every action had been programmed by God. See the second link for more information.

And Eve replied, every one but the tree in the center of the garden, we should not eat from it, nor even touch it, for God told us we would die.
Oh noooooo, you won't die, said the serpent, if you eat of this fruit, you will be like God! (baited hook.....appealing to ego and pride)
Eve...believing the serpent, and seeing the fruit looked rather nice....(paraphrasing here), took the fruit and ate.
Lesson for the day: Satan was a liar from the beginning....and it's still working today. He's hissing at people everywhere to ignore the word of God.

2 The woman said to the serpent, "We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, 3 but God did say, 'You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.' "

God said don't eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, but every other tree or plant they could have eaten from. This is a wonderful (or terrible, whichever way you want to look at it) example of what can happen when man allows God's words to be twisted.

it says "any tree" in the NIV but it does indeed say every tree in the KJV. Very interesting.
God says any tree except the tree of knowledge of good and evil. Perhaps someone else wrote Genesis 3.

God told them they could eat from everything in the garden but one particular plant. And that plant was the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. The Bible says nothing about "apples."

He forbade eating from just one measly Tree which was The Tree of Knowledge.
God put that Tree there to test Mankind's loyalty to God.

I like the old teaching about this.
It seems that God assigned some angels to watch after His new children. Their instructions were to watch them, sort of like baby-sitters. They were supposed to look after their development, or so the story goes. But they grew tired of their boring job, and jealous that God had chosen to create these kids. Their leader decided that, since they were taking care of the kids, the kids ought to look up to them, not God...besides, their development was much too slow. So they decided to teach those innocent children some advanced stuff...and things like greed and selfishness entered the world. It's an interesting variation on the Adam and Eve tail...ancient Jewish teachings.
The whole "fruit" thing is sort of like "spiritual fruit"...it is what is produced within you. Good people produce good fruit...love, patience, etc. People who are not so nice tend to produce alot more of the bad stuff...greed, selfishness, pride, lust for power...stuff like that.

There are many sweet fruits but sometimes though they be sweet they are sour as death when eaten.
Eating of the tree of knowledge/books, can not necessarily bring you closer to god. Only god can bring you closer to god. That seems to be the allegory you may be searching for.
