Ok i exercise alot and do a lot of climbing (three or four times a week) I certainly don't want to take steroids seeing as that will cause problems later in life.

Exercise without "fuel" and you will "overtrain".
It sounds as if you doing enough excercise, so what you need is a proper diet.
The only way to build muscle is with protein.
If you don't like protein shakes then you will have to eat more protein-rich foods. Eggs are good, as is milk, cheese, fish, meat etc.
Avoid steroids like the plague. Trust me on that. They will make you bald, spotty, fat and shrink your testicles to the size of grapes.
I'm an all natural weight lifter, 50 years old and never touched steroids.
Good luck.

Green leafy veg, milk, eggs, fresh fruit.
Plenty of sleep after exercise, to recoup.
Eat carbs after training, so the body doesn't use muscles as food. Reduce exercise such as running, replace with slow strider or walking for half an hour

Don't take steroids, drugs are bad, drugs are bad, M'kay...

Very little protein is needed. Exercise is really, really good for putting on appropriate muscles.

In one book I read it stated that muscle builders are the most aerobically unfit athletes.

Don't be one of them.

Earn whatever muscels you build the hard way.

Any excess protein above that essential for body building and maintenance has to be burned for energy producing urea and giving the kidneys extra work for no good reason.

Your diet is meant to be 70% of your workout. Eat lots of chicken breasts, 5 small meals a day and try pre-mixed shakes packed with protein. Wholemeal bread has lots of protein in it.

DIET + EXERCISE = Muscle

Heavy weights, no arobics. lots of rest, train say mon/wed/fri. Do not overtrain. Eat well. No stress or worry, that is the worst thing for wearing you out. Late nights, boozing, women won't help.

I forgot to mention, no steroids etc, that would be seriously dumb.

Eat lots of red meat and go to the gym. If you just eat the red meat you'll put weight on so go to the gym in order to turn the potential fat into muscle instead.
