I can not answer the why, my Lab does it like crazy. We think it is hilarious. It might be a control issue, like he is walking you. I find he does it more when I am walking him, then when my fiance walks him, so that might be it. Other than that I don't know.
You can put bitter apple on the leash where he bites at it, and I guarantee he will stop. You can pick it up at any pet store. It's a spray on solution meant to discourage chewing. It tastes terrible and he'll only do it a couple times. I've found this to be a harmless habit, however, and I let him do it. We bought a good quality leash that is guaranteed for life through Dr. Foster and Smith and he hasn't chewed through it yet (2 years!! Whoo-Hoo!) so we let him have his fun. Especially when he heels. It's not hurting anybody.

A puppy tugging on a lead can be exasperating! I have a rat terrier who did the same thing when she was a puppy. She would tug on the lead when she walked until it was frayed.
I bought a "Gentle Leader" for her and it works very well. They have them at PetSmart. The gentle leader also fits around the neck and the muzzle of the dog and prevents the tugging and chewing.

Puppies do that kind of thing. They like chewing on stuff, and tugging on things. Basically, it's fun for him.
They sells sprays at the pet store which make things taste bad to dogs, and are completely harmless. If the leash tugging really bothers you, you might try that. He will probably grow out of it on his own, though.

In his mind he is not going for a walk, but rather playing a rousing game of tug the rope with you.
Start walking him in "heel" position on a lead short enough that he can't grab it. It will take awhile, but he'll finally get the idea that he should be "heeling" when he is on the leash.

He is a puppy and he is just trying to play, if it bother you alot you can put something sour or bitter on the leash so he won't tug at it.

our dog this when she's excited! Does it happen at the beginning or the end? if so, i'd say its a harmless way to say "go faster mom" or "lets not go inside yet" training puppies on a leash is a huge part of their overall behavior in my opinion. it takes a while ... good luck

He's playing with it, or doesn't like the pressure on his throat. An easy fix is to coat the end that he grabs with his mouth with Tobasco sauce. He'll stop pretty quick.

To puppies everything is a toy. Just tell him no and give him something else to carry around while you walk him

hes a pup... he'll grow out of it. dont give him treats when he pulls tho... he will think you are praising him for it. so just maybe give him something else to carry around. or get a chained leash, not leather or whatever else
