Sometimes local businesses or the chamber of commerce will offer a scholarship. Sometimes you can get a scholarship if a relative went to that college. But those are small compared to scholarships for athletics and grades. If you can be legally declared emancipated from your parents, you won't have to include their income when applying for financial aid. Don't get in over your head with loans - especially credit cards. It's really tough to start your working career with a mountain of debt that you will take decades to pay off. Try to get a part-time job while you're in school to pay your expenses.

Go to a community college for the first two years and then transfer to a more expensive school for your bachelors degree. That can save you a fortune - just make sure your credits will transfer.

Consider a career that doesn't require college - electricians, plumbers and mechanics can make as much as a person with a four-year liberal arts degree! And they're never out of work.

There is a book at Barnes and noble that you can buy, it is a book of scholarships that are available for a particular year. A friend of mine applied for every scholarship in the book and got her entire college paid for. Because a lot of scholarships people don't even know about so she was the only to apply and she got it. Also apply for a scholarship even if it is just for $50, it all adds up!!! I'm sorry I can not remember the name of the book, but I'm sure you can find it!!

Financial Need is the cause of the maximum amount of scholarships in the United States.

And not that I don't want to help people in Financial Need, but that makes me mad as scholarships should be given out on basis of Merit.

Even the National Merit Scholarship considers Financial Need before granting scholarships.

Community service, volunteer work, and items of this nature that show your support for your community count for a lot when it comes to awarding scholarships. Good grades help, but average grades plus good citizenship is a powerful combination.
It's great to be a terrific baseball player, but for every 18 players, there has to be a plate ump and a couple of base umps. No one cheers them, no one gives them awards, but the 18 players couldn't play without them. So if you are one of the 'supporting players' in life, make sure you mention your role in your scholarship application.
Good luck to you!

Certain religions offer scholarships, as do foundations for certain ethnic groups, there are scholarships for women and certain hard-to-fill career fields. In many cases, if you commit to joining some branch of the military, you can get your college education paid for. The bottom line is there are options open to you. You need to visit with a college counselor and have him/her help you get pointed in the right direction.

Only two ways come to mind:

Have a parent who is powerful, rich and influential who can get a scholarship for you.

Find out who the person is that awards the scholarships (in your case hopefully a man) and make him an offer he can't refuse. ;-)

Get involved with a local non-profit agency. A commitment to the community will qualify you for scholarships you might not otherwise be considered for. Good luck.
