My 11 year-old step-daughter will soon be coming back from a 4 week visit at her mothers. I never realized how much she helped around the house -I have other little ones including a baby and 2 year-old. since she's been gone I've realized exactly how much she does to help out and would like to give her a special thank you. Any suggestions?

Many salons offer something along the lines of a mother-daughter pampering package or mini-makeovers designed for the pre-teen/early teen years. Usually they include a haircut/style, mani and/or pedicure and often the stylist will show her how to apply just a little bit of makeup. Check around a few salons or day spas in your area to find a good deal.
She's at that age where she would love something like that and think about it, every woman loves to get pampered as a recognition for they're hard work! Also it would be a great experience for the two of you to do together.

I think the best gift is when you carefully consider her interests.

Does she have a favorite icecream?
Has she been wanting to repaint her bedroom?
Would she like a DVD of her favorite movie?
Has she demonstrated through her help around the house that she is resposible enough for a special perk (maybe a phone in her room or something she's been pestering you for)?

Maybe she'd enjoy a Saturday afternoon with just the two of you - go shopping or to a movie or even the zoo. She's earned the cost of a babysitter for a few hours.

Maybe it's time she was taken to the department store for a makeup consultation and you could buy her a lipgloss or something.

Give her a cute watch for going back to school with. They're cheap yet functional. However, I would choose an old analog style that forces her to read conventional clock faces rather than a digital watch numeric display. Some sort of expansion band might be better than a leather band so that it can be put on and taken off quickly. Don't make it too expensive so that she doesn't have to worry about scratching it up or losing it!

If u are friendly with her mom then ask her what her daughter likes. but first be sure that shes not having bad feelings regarding u so that she wont spoil things instead of giving the correct advice. Just be good to ur step daughter and treat her like a daughter and never ever treat her like a step one. give her a card telling her how much u missed her and how much she means to you. get her something which she would have liked to have.

All 11 year olds are not created equal...why not just tell her that you never realized how much of a help she is and that you would like to get her a special treat...give her a price range and let her choose.

Take her somewhere and do something with her one-on-one that she likes to do. She helps you out so much, so go out for a day of girl fun with her to pamper her a little. Take what she's interested in- movies, shopping, rollerskating, hair/nail salon, spa day, or whatever she likes and have a girls day out. Ask her if you two had a special girls day what would she want to do. Don't buy her something like others have said, buy her this, buy her that. Love and Appreciation aren't shown with money and things, it is shown with time and thoughtfulness, just like she gives you her time and thoughtfulness when she helps you out. This will also help you bond more. She will appreciate that you take time out of your day to make her feel special. And make sure you tell her how you feel most importantly.

you can take her to mall(but that's only if you wanna be simple) and buy her a few clothes.Or you can buy her a electronic that are popular these days like a Nintendo DS, A ipod nano or the original ipod then get her a ipod card so she can download some songs on to her ipod.Or you can get her a cell phone I would say get her a Razor phone because that's what is popular. If she is girly then you can take her to the salon or get her nails done. Theres alot of things you can give her just use your imagination.

buy a nice card and in writing tell her how much you appreciate everything she does, then get a baby sitter and one saturday have a special day just for her and you and her dad to go to eat, the movies, shpping, the museum, something that interests her.
i think the biggest thing is to make sure she has a card or letter something that is handwritten to her telling her how wonderful she is, spoken words are just there and gone but when it's in writing she can always look back on it and know how much you do love and appreciate all she does for the family

How about leaving hubby home with the little ones and taking her out to get a spa pedicure a few days before school starts? French tips on the toes are very popular right now.
