Me and my Fiance went "browsing" together. I picked out a few that I liked at each jewelry store, and the associates wrote them down on a card for him and put them in order which ones i like the most! She also included the price and payment plans and everything. That way he could still pick out the actual ring, but he knew it would be one that I liked. He got the ring, and asked when the time was right. You want to love your ring and wear it with pride, especially since EVERYONE will ask you to see it! Don't be embarassed or ashamed, just let loose and have fun with it. Pick a few in different price ranges, and dont worry about that stuff, he will get you one that YOU love, not him. If you love diamonds, then I'm sure you'll have diamonds.

This sounds quite a bit how my hubby asked me to marry him, he said "so, when do you want to go pick out your ring?"
I would just answer the question honestly, if you want a diamond, tell him, but it sounds like you'll be happy no matter what, which is really how it should be. The ring is a symbol of your commitment to each other, I have a friend who didn't even get a solitaire (she's a hairdresser and wouldn't be able to wear it anyway), just has her wedding band. Do what's right for you and him. Best wishes to you both!

Hard to know what I would have said because my husband is very traditional as I am, and wanted to buy a diamond engagement ring. But I probably would have said exactly what I wanted. He already knows the important part is marrying him - but if he's really looking for direction then tell him what you want - or more importantly what you don't want. Good luck!

Tell him I never really thought about but why dont we take this weekend and go look. Go to a reputable jewler and if he think "diamonds" are stupid look at some settings you like and see if there are emeralds, sapphires, or rubies you like. You can also design your own ring at http://www.bluenile.com He asked you so that means he is interested. My husband and I went and looked at rings and I never thought I would get the one I loved but he made it happen. Its a fun thing to do together. When he proposed I didnt even think he bought the ring. Dont feel embarrassed you should feel special. Good luck.

tell him you want a plasma big screen tv, in a recent poll women chose that over diamonds like 60% to 40% and then just get a cheaper ring for show cause u need to wear a ring to show youre taken ya know.

I don't think I'd be able to say anything cuz I'd be choking on my lunch in shock! hehehehe Seriously, ugh, what would I say? Probably something like "I get to choose??" I'm kinda old-fashioned and would rather he choose something for me.
Since he's opened the door, you might as well start talking about what you'd like. Be honest, but that should go without saying.

tell him to surprise you! My first engagement ring was a gorgeous ring with a black onyx as I am not a big fan of diamonds.

When he decides how much he can afford, both of you go on a shopping trip. That way everyone is happy.
Then when he thinks the moment is right, he can present it to you,
