You start ovulating on average 12 days after the start of your period.
BUT pregnancy can occur at any time. They say the safest time is right after your period not to get pregnant, but flukes are known to happen and ZAP - you're having a baby.

Everyone's cycle is different. There is a myth that woman ovulate 14 days after their period begins...but that is only an AVERAGE and each month can be different. The other thing is that sperm can live inside you for up to 5 days.... so if you are having a shortened cycle one month and you have sex right after your period and you ovulate earlier than day 14 than yes, there is a chance of getting pregnant. They only way to know is to know exactly when you ovulate. There are several ways to know and some are more effective than others. Some can only predict before ovulation happens and some can only predict that is has already happened. The absolute best info I can give you is to go read a book called Taking Charge of your fertility by Toni Weschler. It will help you understand your body and all the myths about it. It will help you time when you are ovulating and the best times to conceive – or not! . It's about knowing your body and knowing when you are fertile or not. You can pick and choose what you do with your info. Good luck and don't listen the all the myths! Even if you don't get into charting and everything....it will help you in so many ways!

You ovulate 14 days before your period starts. So if your cycle is 30-33 days long (meaning you start your period 30-33 days after the 1st day of your last period), then you would ovulate at approximately day 16-19 (16-19 days after the first day of your last period).
If your period began July 20th, then you would ovulate on approx. August 4-7.
Because sperm can remain viable in your body for up to 72 hours, unprotected sex as early as Aug 1 can lead to pregnancy. Because the egg can remain viable in your body for up to 24 hours, unprotected sex as late as Aug 8 could lead to pregnancy.
To be more accurate you can find out exactly when you are ovulating by a rise in your basal body temperature.

We tried for a year until someone told me about the vitamin E. I even bought ovulating sticks from first response don't wast your money. You ovulate about 10 to 15 days after your period. Everyone is different. My cycles used to be 36 - 40 days and I ovulated 10 days before starting. I discovered it when we were trying to conceive my second child and did the basal temperature stuff. Nowadays, there are ovulation predictor tests that can tell you for sure. Or ask your GYN for a basal temperature chart and track it for a month or so.

about half way between (around day 15 from time you start)... they sell the ovulation tests at Walmart and Places now for pretty cheap... they work pretty great if you want to be 100% sure... everyone is a little different.
