I hear creaks at my house too, but to immediately jump to the conclusion that it is a ghost is illogical. I attribute my house creaks to the house settling. If a car goes by outside, there may be enough of a rumble to make a noise in my house. Also molecules expand and contract depending on temperature It makes perfect sense that as your house is probably climate controlled the AC or Heat will come on and change the molecules in the wood enough that they make a slight but audible change in position or size, hence the creaking.
Your question however, is how to talk to a ghost. Well running under the assumption that there are ghosts how do you know its only one? How do we know its not a ghost dog, or a ghost cat which would make communicating with it futile?
I would reccomend saying "hello" and trying to start a conversation, and once you realize you're only talking to yourself, you will also be more ready to accept the fact that chances are there is no ghost, only molecules in action.

Things move around even it is so small you cannot see it. What happens at night is the normal distractions of life; lights, sound from tv (or radio, or whatever), your movement are greatly lessened. You become more aware of all the things around you that are not normally noticed. Plus if you are expecting to hear something (a ghost) you are more apt to hear "strange noises."
When my kids are not at home I do not hear their normal sounds (even the faint whisper of their breathing). My ears become more sensitive and I do hear more of the creaking and groaning that all man made structures make. I can also hear the wind a lot clearer.
So what is the solution to your ghost problem. Relax...Drink a little (non-caffeine) tea, like a chamomile tea before bed. (Or go to sleep with a radio on, but you may still hear things)
Do not be afraid, those sounds cannot hurt you.

Houses settle at night. It's probably the beams and floorboards cooling down and settling and not a ghost hun. You could just say to the 'noise'... "Ok i'm going to bed now the house is yours" or wish it goodnight or something... it might make you feel better about the whole thing byt talking out loud. When you don't get a reply you'll definitely feel more comfy!

Even if it's a new house, the temperature difference between night and day can cause the house to swell during the warmer temperatures and then contract when it cools, creating the "creaking" sound you hear. My house didn't even creek, it always sounded to me like there were a million bugs scuffling in the crawl space between the ceiling and the roof. I just got used to it, though.

if you think the ghost is going to hurt you then in your living room or on your patio set up a circle of aromatic candles big enough for you to sit in. turn all the lights off. light the candles starting with the one facing towards the sound of the creaking and going counter clockwise. sit in it for protection. ghosts rarely reveal themselves and mainly they only do it as a glimpse of light. if this soul is indeed out of its way to speak to you then it will in your dream using astro projection from the plain of the dead. If it does not do this then you cant talk to it and it most likely will not be a sinister haunting. it might just be a very common haunting, i have a common haunting in my house; of course: i am not believed. there is nothing you can do just let it be. souls can stay in a house because for some reason something emotionally powerful may have happened there or it might just be a place that the soul had attached itself to. no need for worry. e-mail me if you get anymore concerns.

If it is an old house then the house may just be "settling" due to temperature changes during the night. If you think it is a ghost and it is scaring you then tell it to go to God....or call Ghost Hunters! :)

First of all, there is no suce thing as Ghosts. Only demons. You don't want to speak to them, believe me. The sounds that you are hearing is the house expanding and contracting ast the air gets warmer in the day and cooler in the night. If you still think your house is haunted, talk to God. He said that all things can be done for those who love him, and according to his will.

Most houses creak, esp the old ones and ones where there are climate changes. It's all about expansion and contraction and foundations settling. Relax, you have no ghosts. Science to the rescue.

Even older homes continue to make noise on their own.
The reason is because the heat during the daytime makes everything expand just a little bit, and the cold during the nighttime makes everything contract just a little bit.
This expansion and contraction causes the house to make some noise.
