As long as they do work there is no responsibility to change them. If your milk is spoiling after a couple of days or your ice cream melts in the freezer that is not working. Something less is really does not a required repair.

You can always ask. Landlords sometimes try to do little things to keep good tenants in their apartments.

Good luck.

You can request anything you want but that does not mean you will get them. If they still work and they work the same way they did when you rented, then your landlord likely doesn't have to do anything. If, by saying they don't work the best you mean they don't work..at all, then yes you have a right to complete repair or replacement of certain appliances. Check your lease because such remedies may be spelled out in the lease.

You can request whatever you want. It does not mean you will get it. And the best time to negotiate is when your lease is coming up for renewal. Ask for more than you want, so you can make concessions, but still get some of what you want.
For example, ask for new carpet, a paint job and new appliances. Then be willing to accept less and be happy. Good luck.

You can point out the problems with the appliances and they can decide if they want to fix them or put in new ones, if you continue to complain they will likely put in new ones.
