my youngest son will be 5 in a month . he is not trained yet either . he has ODD , ADHD , PTSD, & RAD, to top it off he had problems with his hearing so he is severely delayed in his speach , and has behavorial problems .
we have tried almost everything , stickers, mc donalds , candy , cheerios in the toilet , putting him in underware , nothing seemed to work . he never seems to mind being wet or dirty . he dont care .
something we were told is that he may not feel comfortable going potty . he may feel since it comes out of him it is a part of himself and he wants it , gross but makes sense .
the doctors told us just to be patient , presistant , and keep at it with out becomming upset with him . not to make a huge deal about him not going .
soemthing we have noticed though lately is with summer being here he wants to be out playing . i told him we cant because he dont use the potty , this motivates him to go a bit more but is impossible to do every day . on the days we can we go to the park if he is dry , if still dry after the park he gets a treat when we get home like icecream , if after meals he is still dry another treat or a small toy . we dont put any mind to accidents that happen at night .
another thing is sometimes kids are too involved in playing or tv or such to remember to go potty . so every so often ask him if he needs to go . and try to see if before you go out somewhere if he will sit on the potty for a little bit before you leave. sometimes it will surprise you !
good luck and dont pull your hair out or be too forceful .

My 4 year old has the same a learning and speech delay and it is very frusterating to potty train a child that basically doesn't understand. When I finally got fed up with diapers/pull-ups after his 4th birthday I just took them away. I put him in underware all day long. If he had an accident he didn't like being wet, and I would show him the toilet and tell him this is where you were suppose to go. Of course at night I didn't trust it, so I kept the pull-ups hidden for night time. After about a week of no pull-ups during the day he finally got it down. Then the next issue was the night time b/c he started taking advantage of the pull-ups at night and wouldn't go during the day unless he really had to, so I just switched him then too and of course as all normal kids he has accidents but he has surprised me soo much, that I think it's improved his learning a lot more then before. It's a big step to get over with a special child like ours. Good Luck to you!

I actually potty trained my daughter in less then a week. There are many ideas out there. First of all have you tried rewarding him? Get a box and put toys, candy and tattoos in it. Let him see the box and look at all the items. Get him excited about the fact that if he uses the potty chair he gets to pick out a potty gift. That worked with my daughter. On top of that. Every time she gets to put a sticker on a chart. Helps me keep track of the progress and they are happy about putting it on. Also i read somewhere that a mother let a little boy pick out a tree in the back yard. And when he needed to pee she let him pee on the tree. Seems crazy and you would need a tree and privacy for this method but they at least get excited about peeing on a tree and learn control Ha ha. Granted you don't want them pulling down their pants n public so i don't know how to break this habit after wards. If you need further advice Join me in Pregnancy: 3 chat under health and wellness. Contact a good childrens hospital and ask about having a thorough psychological and neurological assessment. They should also know about resourses for toilet training in difficult cases. The sooner a child, who has learning & developmental problems, is assisted the better the chance of a positive life outcome. Please get off this board and get to professional help. Make sure the professionals have had positive hands on results with other children, in the past. The Shriners hospital should be able to help ,if there is one near by.
Please get on with it, your child deserves the best help possible.

Apart from toilet training is your son learning everything else then. If hes normal in other things then maybe hes stubborn or just scared to sit on the pot. Had he fallen off the potty when he was small to have gotten scared or something like that? just sit on the pot in front of him and tell him to do it himself. Make it like a game. Mayabe he will learn in due course.

Make it a game for him for example he could go outside and pee on a tree. Is there a big brother or a dad that can help with game playing? Like I can pee farther than you can and let him win sometimes. After he gets used to game playing lead him gently to the toilet. Hope this helps.
