They are saying something positive. What they mean is that through thick and thin (troubled times) you are still together and did not split up. That's saying a lot, because all relationships, whether it be friendship, marriage or whatever will eventually come across rocky bumps and big complications. All those times are a test of whether or not you stay together as friends. If you can get through all that and still be friends that is truly amazing and a friendship made of gold. ;o) Also, instead of stating that it was their fault, why not try this instead. Ask it as a question. "Whose fault do you think this is, and why?" That way you will also get to see their point of view, and it also gives them a chance to admit their part in whatever happened." Make sure you really listen without interrupting. Then after they answer the question, you may give them your opinion. Remember to always listen as there are "always" 2 sides to every situation as much as we all hate to admit it.

I take it from your statement that what you have been through has not been all that pleasant. If that is the case, simply state, 'yes we have been through so much together, and it is something I do care nor will I go through again.' As for saying it is their fault, be sure you are not putting the blame off on someone else..without know the circumstances...You chose to be there??/???

Don't.
Most of people's problems are self-inflicted, including yours.
If you want to be polite, kind, loving and helpful, to your FRIEND, you might say, "Yes.life can be difficult. Is there anything I can do to make it easier for you?" And then do it, if you won't be enabling them.
If you want to be a superior, critical, judgmental little hag, you might say," Yeah? Well, if you weren't so stupid, this wouldn't have happened. Idiot!"
Which kind of friend are you?

No relationships is about only one member of the relationship. Each has a part to play in all the good, bad, ugly, indifferent things that happen.

If they are your friend, you can say just about anything to them with responsible honesty and tact. Tell them how you feel. Don't worry about hiding your feelings. Otherwise what you really have is a good time buddy.

Funny! I'd give them a huge shite-eating grin and then say, "You're right. I don't know what I would have done without you to bail me out of jail, even though you're the one who put the hash in the dashboard in the first place."
Flip him/her off, then saunter away.

Believe me...if they tell you that, they have no idea that it is their fault. It is the same as when someone tells you "How could you throw this relationship away." If you have to ask...

By confronting them and not being bossy to them. If they are a true friend they will stick by you. And will continue to stay by you. I confronted 2 friends and one didn't want to be friends with me anymore and the other one did. and it showed me who was my true friend!
