Because there's nothing else going on in the world. Maybe if there was a war in the middle east or a gas crisis in the U.S or some Asian country testing Nukes than we wouldn't notice Mel Gibson. Unfortunately none of those are happening so Mel Gibson's personal life is the most important thing to us right now.

You're not really Mel Gibson. Besides, famous people are expected to uphold themselves to a higher level of social standards. We don't pay money to watch the average Joe on television and movies. We wouldn't buy the church choir's album (if they had one) So why do we want to see celebs acting "normal" and in Mel's case abnormal.(although it was funny!)
