Probably the most critical thing is the leader. You want someone the kids are going to relate to. So he/she should be laid back and kind of cool. The leader should also take an active interest in the kids. He/she might go to their sporting events or concerts or anything that the kids are doing. This last thing is really helpful because it communicates that the leader actually cares about the kids. Also make sure the activities are fun and that the kids get time to just hang out in a relaxed environment.

Now for the sad news.

If you want the program to be big... Go after the popular kids. They’ll draw in other kids. The leader shouldn’t spend much time on the fringe kids. A youth minister I knew many years ago put it bluntly. “Don’t waste your time on the losers. No one wants to hang out with loser and by spending time with them you’ll end up being a loser too.” The guy seemed to know what he was talking about because he led a huge high school ministry. Still, in my opinion it was/is rather sad.

To make a youth group stronger i believe you have to understand what the are going through and what they like!! For example you don't want to play bluegrass gospel when they listen to Christian Rock. Liven up and be funny and make sure they are getting the word. Use examples they will understand.

1ti 3:2 A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach;
1ti 3:3 Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous;
1ti 3:4 One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity;
1ti 3:5 (For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?)

first of all be someone a child can look up to and respect and you will be surprized at who will follow

Sacrifice with the genuine interest in loving them. if you put them above you, they'll put the One who infused you that knowledge before themselves. Take up the Cross!
