What does it mean when God said: "Let us make man in our own image according to our likeness."

Please, no Biblical Babble, I don't want to hear all this stuff about how a Dog chased his tail and caught it then ate himself so he is no longer a dog, nonsense. I want a logical answer.

Before you answer, please look up Image and Likeness and know their definition.

Biblical Babble is soooo much fun. I see that the Bible does not mention cars in it, so it looks like they don't exist. So why are there so many parking spaces at Church?? LOL 8-)

An image is basically a picture. It looks like the original, but it lacks the ability to think or function like the original

Likeness is basically self explanatory. One thing is "like" another. Twins are alike, but they are not the same.

In the same way, man was made to be like God. In many ways, we are like God.

1) We have authority and dominance over nature.
2) We are symetrical, orderly and complete.
3) We are self aware.
4) We are social creatures.
5) We have free will.

There are probably many other ways we are like God, but that doesn't mean we are God. Nor does it means we are EXACTLY like God.

What kind of image you want yourself to be, if you are going to make a clone? If you are happy with yourself then most likely you will make something very much like you.
I can't help using the Biblical babble as you said but here it is. Since the creator used the words "IN OUR OWN IMAGE AND LIKENESS" and since we are all made to believe the God has no shape or form, it only means that what was created as a man is just the "SPIRIT". And then most likely, it is the "spirit" that started looking for a physical body to use it as his vehicle for living. It could also be the reason why in the first period of the world our choices of the body started from apelike forms and little by little we got vain and here we are now all good looking ( I hope you already are).
So, the "image and likeness" you want to know is GOD's character which is good and light. But wait, when Adam and Eve disobeyed His covenant, God said, "Now that they become like us, knowing GOOD AND EVIL'' so, the image and likeness is not very complete yet before because EVIL is now there too. And the image and likeness now that we are talking becomes three characters within the spirit..they are now the good, the light and the evil.... at least it is not the good, the bad and the ugly.
When God said "Let there be light!", where do you think He was?
I want to satisfy you by saying our image and likeness to God this time is our spirit that works on three choices, the good which is the right side of God, the evil which is the left side and the light that will shines on everyone (our Aura) specially if in our choices you would want to get rid of your evil characteristics.

Image.
This is a real point of confusion amongst believers. I personally don't think it is meant in a purely physical sense, though it could be physical.
Most people think it has to do with soul and/or spirit. Being that this is what makes us different from animals.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In common usage, an image (from Latin imago) or picture is an artifact that reproduces the likeness of some subject—usually a physical object or a person.

Images may be two dimensional, such as a photograph, or three dimensional such as in a statue. They are typically produced by optical devices—such as a cameras, mirrors, lenses, telescopes, microscopes, etc. and natural objects and phenomena, such as the human eye or water surfaces.

The word image is also used in the broader sense of any two-dimensional figure or illustration, such as a map, a graph, a pie chart, or an abstract painting. In this wider sense, images can also be produced manually, such as by drawing, painting, carving, by computer graphics technology, or a combination of the two, especially in a pseudo-photograph.

A volatile image is one that exists only for a short period of time. This may be a reflection of an object by a mirror, a projection of the sun on a wall by a pinhole camera, or a scene displayed on a cathode ray tube. A fixed image, also called hardcopy, is one that has been recorded on a material object, such as paper or textile.

A mental image exists in someone's mind: something one remembers or imagines. The subject of an image need not be real; it may be an abstract concept, such as a graph or function—or an imaginary entity or being.

It is possible that it may mean an actual physical similarity between us and God (meaning God would have a nose in the middle and a mouth under it, two eyes near the top and pointing forward, and hair on top), but I believe it means more in a spiritual, mental, and emotional sense. We have a sense of justice, a conscience, we care about other people, we even get angry and sad (which are all attributes God is said to have, though He is supposed to have more control over those feelings then we sometimes show). I believe it means more that we show those things, though in obviously lesser amounts than God does.

ABSOLUTELY CORRECT! Man is made in God's IMAGE. Man is NOT a god. Man has no god-powers. New agers are completely off base here. We are like tiny mirrors that simply reflect His Glory [and other attributes] for others to see. Since God is Spirit, the Image is spirit. Therefore the physical attributes of man are irrelevant in this matter.

Your quote comes from a man and not from God. It is less than 3000 years old. Unless you think the world does not predate the quote you should not take it seriously. Ask yourself why would God create an image that will systematically seek to destroy his creation? The image of God includes everything. That includes Martians, if they exist, creepy crawly things and even Jimmy Swaggart and Pat Robertson. Let's not forget you.

Its metaphorical in that God is 1 God comprised of 3 divine persons, or attributes if you will.

Mankind is created along the same lines. One Person made up of three dimensions....a body, soul, and spirit. Can you see the metaphorical connection now. This makes God and Man quite similar.

Remember in Genesis, God says; Let US make man in OUR image.

It was written in Hebrew 3400 years ago. Whuch definition would you like me to look up? The English? Do you speak Hebrew? Biblcal Hebrew? Would any answer we give not be dismissed as "Biblical Babble"?

I totally agree with you. What makes the human race so great that we are supposedly the only ones that have a connection with God. I am however atheist, so it seems to me like it comes from the fact that if there were a god to exist we would want him/her to be in our human form, so that is how we created him. I completely understand what you mean though. It makes you think.

Yes. Could be, if you see in your image the whole universe and the likeness.
