How do I give a title to a column in Microsoft Excel?

I am starting a spreadsheet and can't figure out how to title each column in the cell. Is there a way to do this without just labeling it in the first row?

Yes, you do it on the first row. No other way.
However, when you sort the data, you will be asked if there is a header row. Say yes and you won't find your title row in the middle of the data!
