The last time this happened, I did not check for ID, but took it to the police station. I did this, because not too terribly long ago, someone else did the same for me. Civilised, yes?

Tough question. Of course the right thing to do is to make every attempt to contact that person. I have lost my wallet and just wished it would come back just for the pain of redoing everything such as credit cards and ID. I could have cared less for the cash as that part was assumed lost. Once I also found a womens wallet with around $3000 dollars in it, check books, credit cards etc. I could see from the address that she lived down the street so I went over and knocked. I explained that I found it and she snatched it out of my hands and slammed the door. No thankyou or nothing..... so in retrospect I kind of wish that I had kept the money and then returned the wallet as a simple thankyou would have sufficed.

take it to the main area of where you found it.
the movies: a box office
gas station: the attendant
doctor's: front desk
etc.
It's easiest for the person who lost it. Then they go back where they thought they lost it and not run around town searching. As for a "reward", returning it is the decent thing to do. It's THEIR wallet. They shouldn't have to pay for its return.
If it's found somewhere with no main area like a park or something similar, contacting the individual directly with the ID info or taking it to the local police is the proper thing to do.
Honeslty, just think of what you'd want someone to do if you lost your wallet.

Get online and do a reverse look-up for their phone number and attempt to call them. If I had no luck, I'd go back to where I found it, and find the nearest place of business (gas station, grocery store, etc.) and turn it in there. Hopefully the person will realize they lost it as they were walking out of Kroger (for example) and have enough sense to call and ask if anyone turned it in.

The PROPER thing to do is return it. When the person gets it back, the proper thing for him/her to do would be to open the wallet and give you the money that's in it. If there's no money, tough luck!

I guess i would do the decent thing & attempt to return it. But if it had a lot of cash in it, that would be way tempting to go shopping!!!

Return it or take it to the police station and let them handle it.

Take it to lost & found. If it had money, I'd be fighting hard not to take it for myself.
