When the doctor measures it then they are checking the size of your uterus compared to how far along in the pregnancy you are. It's just another way to help predict the due date. Plus if you are overly large, they might do an ultrasound to check for mulitple babies.

They aren't really measuring your belly, they are measuring from the top of your pubic bone to the height of your fundus ( top of your uterus). If they measured your belly, there would be no help, because everybody has different bellies. I am very large (overweight) but if they had measured me at 38 weeks my uterus would measure about the same as a skinny woman at 38 weeks! but my belly soooo would not. They measure your uterus to keep track of how large your uterus is getting because this usually gives them a pretty good idea of the size of the baby. With my last one, at my 6.5 month appointment, my belly measured 40 weeks, so they sent me for an ultrasound, which i went to at 7 months, they said my baby was already 7 pounds, which let the doc know i was gonna have a ginormous baby lol. I delivered at 40 weeks with the baby weighing 10lbs 6 oz! It is an important tool.

How far you are along. If your belly doesnt grow than something could be wrong with the baby. It should be pretty close but the size of your belly may very a little.

Your belly should measure how many weeks you are. If your 34 weeks your belly should measure 34 inches. If it doesn't your baby may not be growing enough

It's a way to gage the size of the baby and to determine if it is growing at a normal weight. It also helps determine a due date if you are unsure.
