They want that person to feel as bad as they do, that is if you broke up with them. If they broke up with you and said bad things, its to make you look bad so it justifies the brake up.

Because most of things that people say after they break up are the truth, however, they lie and say they didn't mean it because they don't want to hurt the person...it doesn't make sense, and I wish I had a better answer, but I guess both people involved in a break up are hurting, so they express themselves too much.
