As a general rule, if you can't afford the $100 that it takes to adopt a dog from your local shelter or pound, you can't afford to own a dog. Responsible dog ownership costs a couple thousand dollars a year (I probably spend about $200 a month on my two dogs, averaged out over the year).

Taking free dogs just encourages people to give dogs away free, which is a really REALLY bad idea. Offering to give your dog away free means that there's a very good chance it will wind up as someone's snake food (if its a small dog) or being sold to a research lab to be experimented upon. It happens.

I don't mean to sound rude but no animal should be "free" and no one in their right mind should trying giving one away free. For me as a boxer rescuer I know I wouldn't ever give a dog away free, if someone can't afford to pay for a dog, what would make me think they could afford to take care of them-not just food either. Having a dog is difficult and can be expensive...my advice is try looking into a rescue shelter, your local humane society or adopt from petfinder.....there are so many innocent animals in shelters and rescues that need loving homes...

If you are looking for a specific breed, type the breed's name & 'rescue' after that in the search bar. If looking for mixed breeds, check at your local shelter or in your local newspaper. Most rescues & shelters do charge a nominal fee (remember, they gave the dog vaccinations, health care & hopefully spayed or neutered it). Plus, don't forget: dogs are an on-going expense, with food & vet care needs. If cost is a big factor, wait until you can better afford one. In the meantime, you could volunteer to be a dog walker at your local shelter or boarding kennel for now! It would be greatly appreciated by the staff & the dogs.

I doubt if you will find any websites that offer "free" dogs. Many people discourage the offering of free animals due to the fear they may be used for illegal medical testing.

If you want a pet, try your local humane society. Although, there will be a fee involved.

look in the news paper for people giving away puppies/ dogs. alot of people for one reason or another need to give away thier dog. like going to a nursing home, moving to a place where dogs are not permitted. theres plenty out there!

Try looking in the newspaper - there are usually plenty of listings in there. You could also try your local animal shelter, bulletin boards or ask around to see if someone has any dogs they could give you.
