I've always been using Windows base OS, but thinking about moving to a FREE OS. Wise?

Linux is great. It takes a little getting used to, but if you can it works awesome! There are MANY different flavors, just try different ones until you find one you like. Try Ubuntu, PCLinuxOS, Debian...

Mac OS X, But it's hardly free. You don't want the best; you want the cheapest.

Try DesktopBSD: it is real Berkeley UNIX and it is free.
You can also to start with FreeSBIE: it is live CD BSD, so you can try it without installing

if you want something free it's prolly going to be linux
but I have never used it...
