Call the police dept where you made the original theft report on the missing handgun. You will need your case number. If you've lost that - the date of report, reporting officer's name might help locate the case number. The police dept will then be able to do a records search to determine if the weapon was recovered or is still listed on NCIC as stolen.

All you have to do is contact the police dept that confinscated the weapon. You will supply them the brand, description and serial number of the weapon along with a copy of the police report. Most likely the weapon will be held as evidence for as long as thier trial and anay appeals go on, It can take years for you to get your weapon back.

Police officers are real touchy about that stuff. You could talk to the cheif about the incident. He may or may not do much about it. They do have to log that stuff in. A lot of times it just sits in the evidence room, unclaimed. They record serial numbers and tag it. Some of that stuff ends up in pawn shops or gun shops. Either way, they have records to tell you where it was sent. Look there.

If the gun was legally yours and you reported it stolen, then you should be able to recover it after the criminals court date. Check with a local attorney on how to file the correct paperwork to recover it.

I would assume the gun is registered in your grandfathers name. If at all. You will have no way to get the gun back as it can only be registered to one name.

Call your local police department and explain to them the name ON the gun, E.G. who it is/was registered to, and that it is yours now. But my question to YOU is, how are you going to prove THAT?
