It depends on the child and parent. You can start them at 8 month and some wait until a year and then there are others who wait until 2 years. But i would say anywhere from 8 months to a year is normal.

You can introduce a sippy cup as soon as the child can hold the cup. My sons doctor wanted me to get rid of the bottle between 12 and 18 months.

My son is almost 18 months and refuses to go through his bedtime routine without a bottle still. But the rest of the time he's on sippy cups, and I think we finally got him to accept thm at around a year or so. Really, the best age is when they'll take it. Just keep offering whenever you want to replace the bottle.

i am a nutritionist

it is recommended formula be given for at least 1 year (2 if breast feeding)

sippy cups are not intended to replace bottles ever, they are ment to be used in situations that regular cups cant (like long car rides) the rest of the time a child should use a cup without a valve.

juice and milk can not be given in sippy cups because both cause nursing bottle syndrome (they are safe for use with water only)

cups with valves do not help wean your child they require the child to suck just like a bottle does you can skip wasting money on sippy cups they are almost useless...

You should start giving a child a sippy at 5 months, just offer it to them, they may not want it. If you can get a baby off the bottle at 8 months then your doing a very good job with that. My daughter didn't get off the bottle til she was 16months. Plainly because I spoiled her, but then my husband got fed up with it and threw them away. Any where between 8 months and a year is a great time to get you child off a bottle, any longer it's hard as hell.

One year. At about 11 months we started getting our daughter off the boob and onto a bottle. Sippy cups came alittle later.

8 months is a good time to start introducing the sippy cup. be prepared for the struggle to hold on to that bottle! by a year they should be bottle and binky free.

How able is the child to hold something by his or her self?

That would enter into it.

No specific age per se, but I'd think that by a year the child should be using a sippy cup.
