Depends on the length of hair and the season we are in. Hairballs are caused by the cat not being able to pass the fur out the other end of its body. Sometimes it takes awhile for the hairball to come up and you will see your cat hacking up his food as the clump of hair inside acts like a plug. The food can't go around so it comes right back out. You should give your cat a hair ball remedy bought at the local pet store to help with the ease of it hacking it up. That can be uncomfortable and why the cat tries to stop the hairball from coming up in the first place. Depending if it is shedding season along with the length of hair, diet, amount of water you cat drinks all play a part in the number it will have.

Some cats rarely pass or throw up hairballs, some do it almost daily. It really depends on the cat. Diet and length of fur play a role in how many hairballs a cat has.
