How can this verse be used to help people who are overcome by sin?

St. Mark 8:34-38

"Whosoever will come after me , let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.

For whosoever will save his life shall lose it ; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel's, the same shall save it.

For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?

Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels."

To deny yourself means to give up what you want, what you desire. To 'deny' yourself the things (even the people) you hold dear. To deny yourself means to do without. In the context of this verse, that would mean to do without so that you can fully concentrate on God.

If you're willing to give up what you desire and depend on God instead, he promises to give you what you need and bless you.

Why deny your inherent desires? Doesn't make sense to me.

As long as we live by the laws and morals of our society (Yes, that's right. Laws and morals were created by sympathy and empathy for our fellow man, not by an invisible man), we should be happy and content among our selves.

If your inherent desires do not hurt anyone else, anyone who tells you to deny them is doing you a disservice and your suppressed desires may come out in different ways.

This question is too long. I saw your comment on another question where you said "homosexuals choose sin" Are you saying that because guys don't talk girls with @ss faces? Or is it because you are a huge c u m dumpster? Or is it because you are so bad in bed (even though you f u c k everything that walks) that guys prefer other guys once they've had piece of your tuna steak?

He's talking about denying your own sinful desires and doing what God wants, which is to live a pure life, apart from sin.

To DENY HIMSELF simply means to die to self. This concept is also known as the putting off of the old man (Ephesians 4:22)
To die to self means we kill the old sinful nature that we inherited from Adam. If you have any more questions I would be glad to help you. (If you have more questions contact me through my yahoo account.)

Best example:
When you marry you SHOULD deny the desires to be with others for sexual purposes because you are bound to your spouse.
In the same way you deny anything in your life that does not please God or harms your relationship with him.

If you wanna be like Jesus, walk in his footsteps, then you have to strive for perfection! Not be tempted by sin.
