Cats do dream at least least scientist think. Cats sleeping with half open eyes have been observed making the rapid eye movements REM that is associated with dreaming in human sleep. Dogs dream too.
Cats don't tell us what they dream about which is good because people reciting their dreams are tedious. Imagine if you had to get it from two species.
Just because he is growling do not assume he is having a bad dream. He will probably forget it anyway. Cats live in the moment.

First-time cat owner here!
I never heard of a cat dreaming, but mine will kick his legs out and do the same little growling as yours in his sleep! So I guess they do dream! I keep learning about these fascinating little creatures every day.

yea could be dreaming of a dog or something. or if my one cat did that I would assume that he's dreaming of my dad. for some reason he doesn't like my dad. I think the first time my dad held him he was playing with him like you play with a dog, kind of rough when cats need to be played with more gentle. unfortunatly, he has since associated my dad with that eventhough we have told my dad to be more gentle and he is but my cat just doesn't like him still. he'll growl and hiss at him.

You would never believe it. I asked my dog what could make a kittie growl in his sleep and she told me, "Meow".

I used to have a cat that snores very lightly. Your kitty could just be snoring.
