What could be the course and what`s the possible cure?

Hangnails...nothing's worse. Keep your hands well moisturized and clip the tearing skin- dont peel it further. You also might consider getting a manicure at least twice a month. If you nibble at your hands or nails, stop, or you'll exacerbate the problem.

It could be because that area is very dry. Biting your nails coul be a cause, it is a defence mechanism of the body for the skin to peal off. You also need to push you cuticles back often as this will help prevent it. The best time to do so is after a hot bath or shower when the cuticles are soft. This will prevent the cuticles from tearing and thus preventing subsequent pain. It is also a good idea to moisturise that area specifically.

I grabbed one of those little bits on my finger last night and gave it a quick rip, I've now got a half inch gouge running up my finger. I can't help doing it though. I think it's just dryness and wear and tear. Be honest, do you eat the bits you pick off?

Don't get a manicure, it will compromise your masculinity.

sounds like my brother he picks his nails and surrounding skin...
get a manicure and keep your hands moisturized
