yes, people still sometimes lighten their hair as far as "white". Just so you know, it is really quite a procedure and your hair is NOT actually white (so if you do attempt this yourself, don't go for white cause your hair would fall apart) what makes it look white is actually a toner (a pastel shade of hair colour, usually purple) that makes the hair look white.
Seriously, I recommend a professional to do this for you. ESPECIALLY if you've coloured your hair before!

Some do and some use hair products that are like very intense blond shades and make their hair gray.

yes they do.....but now they apply toners that get rid of unwanted tones..(like gold). This is called a double process blonde. Do not do this at home......chose a good colorist...
