I'd like to exercise to keep in shape, but since I've just found that my big toe is broken or fractured, I cannot do walking or running, hiking, etc.. I'd like to exercise by swimming laps, but I'd also like to make sure the toe and foot do not twist and strain in the water as I kick. It is not set and currently not wrapped. It is a recurrence of a fracture or break from 14 years ago that healed on its own with help from the wearing of a stiff wooden shoe (no dressings or wraps). I can see no bruising or deformation of the toe or foot. P.S. Please don't say "ask your doctor." I am uninsured and have tried in vain to be seen for this injury. Finding and seeing a doctor would cost more in aggravation than the broken toe itself. Thanks!

I tried taping the big toe to the next toe and swimming this way. The tape came off by the fourth lap, even though it was touted as "waterproof". Thanks for the advice, though; I may try a physical tie-off method; to the second answerer; it has gotten better, so it may not actually be broken. (Symptoms were the same as they were when I broke it last, so I thought it had been reinjured.) Thanks to you both for your answers so far!

You can try taping the toe and foot to immobilize the joints in the area. Also take some pain medication. If there has been no injury and it just hurts, it could be arthritis. If it still hurts while swimming, please go get x rays. I do not want to scare you, but there could be a lot of things wrong with your foot. For example, due to a fracture a blood vessel could have been cut off not allowing parts of you foot to receive nutrients. This could cause the tissues in the foot to die and need to be amputated. This is pretty extreme, but you still might need surgery.

PS I just want to let you know that i am not a doctor.

Tape the big toe to the next toe but not to tight or you will cut off circulation. This may not be the best but it is good if you do not intend to see a doctor. The same holds true with fingers.

Might try a wooden article such as a tongue depressor.. Or, any rigid item you may find around the house.. can tape it to the foot as well as the toe. For very firm support.
