By the time they are two and a half they should understand the concept of why they should use the potty. If you try to get them to use the potty before that time the child might feel overwhelmed and afraid of not pleasing you, and still not understand why the potty should be used.
There are books that deal with this subject or your pediatrician can help you. Explain that when they have a bowel movement then it is time for the potty of when they identify the need to pee they need to use the potty. Remember that for some children whatever comes out of their body is a part of them. Never show disgust because the child might interpret it that he or she is disgusting to you. I used to make it a kind of ceremony where we said goodbye to the poop or peepee and then I would dump it into the toilet and let my child flush it away. When they blow it say nothing negative, just that they will do better next time. Encourage them to leave diapers with disposable panties or if you use cloth ones then start to buy them with ruffles or images of their cartoon characters or superheroes, depending on if its a boy or a girl. Make a show when they do things right that will encourage them to continue their efforts. Yelling at them will not help at all. Be supportive, that is what parents are for. Have your child learn to identify when they want to go to the bathroom and get them to one fast. I remember always identifying where the bathrooms were located in every single restaurant, mall, movie complex, department store, supermarket, or school, so when the time came we just ran for it. I always asked my child if she felt she could make it to the bathroom and she always said yes I can. That is what we need to teach our kids, that they can.
Good Luck

Start early with boys. Mine was two when i started and he is now almost 4 and got potty trained. Boys are harder to potty train. The pull ups dont work either. Use reagular underware at home and just monitor what he does and drinks. Thats how I did it. When we went out he had pull ups on untill he was confidint enough to use the potty in public. But still expect aciddents once in a while.

Well my daughter is 4 now and I started her a little after 2 and by 3 she was potty trained...you have to think about how fast your child grasp things...my daughter learned really quickly but some learn slower...I would say start now and just work with your child on potty training and he will catch on soon or later...good luck :)

I dont think your sons too young, but I dont think that there is really a certain age to begin potty training. Really, you should just keep encouraging him and when he is genuinely interested he will progress mostly on his own. Just keep the idea of going potty fresh in his head and he will grasp the concept on his own soon enough.

2-2 in a half. i think that u should do more the encourage, you should tell him to go on the potty and give him an award. not candy because they will just end up forcing it so that they can get the prize. give him stickers or a little toy that he has already and doesnt play with as much. he is two he wont notice./
good luck

Probably around 2 or 3...but you should get them this book called Prudence and the Pee Pee Potty...(they also have the one for boys :D ) I had it when I was younger so did my sister and all my cousins. Sometimes you can even buy the book that comes with the potty. It's so cool. That book is amazing...cuz she sat, and she sat and she sat and she sat...and like at the end of the book...she finally made a poop. lol It's great. That will influence them to use the potty so they can be like Prudence/Phillip

Can your son do the following?
Follow one step instructions (eg "get your coat")
Pull up or pull down his trousers
Show an interest when other members of the family use the toilet?
Be able to leave two hours between wetting himself
If he does then you might want to start trying now. However, he's still very young so don't worry if he's not ready yet.

I started my 3 y/o when he was 20 months old. Because that's when he learned to take his pants off and on. I just switched cold turkey from diapers to underwear. And explained that he should not let them get wet.
