Hell is basically used as a replacement for Sh*t. The term is "scared the sh*t out of me." That can literally happen. Also, "Scared the hell out of me" is also valid. Think of scared straight. Someone being so scared of something that they stopped doing wrong.

Even hell was scared... a hyperbole... and ironic that hell could be scared... I wonder if in turn, dumping the hell out could actually make you a very very very good person.. hmm.. lol
