My wife and I have done IVF. When they did the egg retrieval on July 26th, they told us to abstain for 7 days. Her transfer was done on Saturday, July 29th. Yesterday, after waiting 7 days from when we were initially told, we had sex thinking it was o.k. Because I was concerned, I did my own research this morning and most websites said to wait until after the pregnancy test to have intercourse again. Now I'm worried that we should've use more self control. Does anybody know about this? Somebody please tell me there is nothing to worry about.

To clarify, nobody at the clinic said that we shouldn't have sex after the transfer. It was only after the retreival that we were told to abstain for the 7 days.

Ask your doctor. If he said to wait 7 days, then, you are fine. Knowing the anatomy of a woman, I don't see how having intercourse would interfere w/ implantation. The most likely reason to obstain from intercourse for 7 days, would be to ensure that the cervix is closed, and that you don't stimulate any cramping (which is caused by a release of progesterone when having intercourse). Just relax, and ask your doctor, or his/her nurse. I wish you the best of luck

My wife was a surrogate and if you have sex too soon, It can dislodge the egg and you will have to start all over again. They tried 3 times unsuccessfully and the fourth time was the winner. But the doctors did instruct us not to do it until the test came back positive. One way to help the egg stick better is progesterone shots in her ***. i know that sounds horrible, but the first 3 times we didn't use them, and the 4th worked out for us. Anyways, if you are going through IVF and you have any doubts about sex, just don't until the doctor clears you for lift off. it will save you a load of heartache. It definately is streesful. I had to wait 3 months at a time. I'll pray for you........

When i was a surrogate the reason they told me to abstain was because when they do anything invasive they don't want to introduce infection to the womb. after the 7 days...they told us to wait for a positive preg test to have intercourse because they wanted to know the pos pg test was from IVF not from my husband. i think if you waited the 7 days you are fine because the egg is either going to implant or not....you didn't make it NOT implant by having intercourse. some couples have sex every night during the ovulation peak....they could have gotten preg the first night....so all those other nights don't make her loose the egg....best wishes!!
