My thinking is that instead of rotting pits of old decaying garbage (which we always eventually grown baseball fields over.) Why not send it up a converyor belt and drop it into some magma where it can burn off.

That would be a grand idea. However most volcanoes aren't just open pits of lava like you see in the movies. And also the pollution level would rise. It was a good idea though.

One of the problems with municipal trash incinerators is the
gasses released into the atmosphere...
We are trying to reduce atmospheric pollution...
Granted a volcano would make a great incinerator if you
could overcome the logistics problems....

No too many problems but to tap the volcanoes to produce steam to drive turbines and supply our electricity.
