Crunches work but depending on your build they can also increase a "bunched up" look around your lower abdomen instead of shrinking it.The thing to remember about muscle development is that it's best to train them in a balanced manner. For instance, if you do crunches, the muscles will contract producing a "cramp"-like feeling. To counteract that, you should then train with leg lifts to stretch and lengthen the muscles. Leg lifts, by the way, are excellent at targeting the stubborn area in the lower abdomen that's hard to reach any other way. There is another exercise ( calesthenic) called a Vertical Gut Buster ( Marine Corps terminology) which is excellent at tapering waistlines and tightening the stomach by engaging the lateral oblique muscles. Stand with your legs spread shoulder-width apart, and put your arms behind your head. Then, in a four count movement, twist your body in such a manner ( while raising your bended leg to waist height) as to place your right knee to your left elbow, then your left knee to your right elbow. The benefit of this exercise is it trains the abdomen without need for getting down onto the floor or a mat. And, since it simultaneously trains stablizer/connector muscles, it is a great core strength trainer. If you find that initially too difficult to accomplish, try alternately raising your knees up to waist height then back down until you can do this 25 to 30 times with ease ( each leg). Raising your knees trains the abdomen too, particularly the lower areas. Good luck with your training. One final note, assuming you're healthy enough to attempt to train, ab exercises can usually be safely done everyday. Consult a physician first though, to confirm this.

I used to do crunches, but I later found that Pilate's works better for me in terms of flattening out my stomach, AND it tones up my entire body.

Oh, and eat healthy...if not your abs will just hide behind a pooch on your stomach.

Static Contraction Training

the fastest most efficient training there is, but make sure that you do it properly and get the PROPER and ACCURATE calibration before you start.
