Tod is correct until he gets to ---It refers to and then the wheels fall off ! PAL is short for Phase alternating line which put very simply is what the main diff with NTSC is, in Pal every other line of colour information is stored ( in a delay Line ) and compared with the next line for colour errors that have happened in the transmission path to the antenna , the colour error info then is averaged out line by line , the result is much more accurate colour rendition than systems that don`t have the PAL system such as NTSC, in fact NTSC is jokingly dubbed " Never Twice Same Colour " . The yanks are really jealous of the PAL system. Sorry Tod . Just read your question again and would like add that there is no such thing as a PAL tuner , The tuner will tune any system that falls whith in its frequecy range !

PAL is a colour encoding system for broadcast television systems.PAL is a 625-line/50 Hz television system as to your American NTSC 525-line/60Hz system. In Australia the analog broadcast runs PAL-B/G UHF/VHF (Ultra High Frequency and Very High Frequency). PAL is encode of video colour, it refers to the line count and frame rate. Sometimes if on the wrong setting the set can't determind the video colour so it disrupts with the audio gaining a buzzing noise from the speakers.
