I play a lot of cricket and four years ago i did my cruciate ligament while bowling. Since i've come back and started bowling again, my pace has dipped drastically and i get alot of pain in my lower back once i stop bowling. I've gone to see a chiropractor and apparently i'm popping a joint in my back/hip when i bowl because my back is weak. Any ideas how to strengthen my lower back? Also, will this give me my pace back???

Stretch 1st always.....it helps get the oxygen to the muscle & lengthen to perform better. Just do the basic leaning over to the side, arm over the head stretch. And light twisting to warm up the back muscles.

"Superman Exercise"
Lay on the floor, belly down.
Lift your upper torso (chest, arms & head) off the ground
In combination of the legs and feet off the ground
You will balance on your stomach and will look like your flying like superman.
This may be hard to start off so only hold it for 2-4 counts and work your way up to an 8 count. Do maybe 5 repuations, then maybe up it to 10 as your lower back becomes stronger.
*Important* Stretch after working out also; you 'll get better results.

There is nothing worse than an ageing cricketer - they hang on long after their sell by date.

Go to yoga this really does help also pilates which concentrates on the core muscles and teaches you good posture.

I have had a sore back and shoulders for years and blame bad posture as I was a typist before electricity was invented and had to pound a keyboard all day!!!! Yoga and excerise helped tremendously. Try it and never be bowled out again. My ex still plays cricket aged 57 and suffers sooner than admit to hanging up his box!!

Swimming. I have lower back trouble and find swimming the best exercise. Any stroke, just up and down the pool as many times as you can. Though, you'd better check with your doctor or someone that this okay!

I'm afraid back problems can be lasting problems despite all the claims of miracle cures offered by chiropractitioners... your lifestyle at home can help, e.g a good seating position, upright chairs etc...

Pilate's is one the best exercises to straighten your back. Pat Cash has an injury to his back and they said he would never be able to play again. He started Pilate's and the rest is history.

I dunno if this will strenghten you're lower back, but it helps me to releive my pain there:
Lie on your front, and prop yourself up on your elbows and feel you're lower back "stretch slightly"

Am not sure whether you will get your pace back, but bowling pain-free can only help your cause. Failing that, take up spin bowling!

Good luck!
