A bit of cognitive behavioural therapy is best, proportional to the degree of depression.
Mild depression - get out and active - hang with friends (make new ones if the old crowd is too depressing) - listen to music - make music - dance - play on the beach in the sand - swim - fly a kite - etc.
Moderate depression - this needs serious CBT with a therapist. A lot of work here, involved with challenging thoughts and re-interpreting them in accordance with REALITY (not just positive thinking). Antidepressants may be useful here, but they have only a 40% success each time... oddly, many people prefer to have pills and are reluctant to do CBT.
Severe depression - usually too depressed to do CBT. We are talking about people who don't talk or don't move... etc. These people may well improve on antidepressants, but sometimes are so far gone they need ECT - electroconvulsive therapy.

The best thing is to talk to a professional psychologist. They can help you learn how to overcome depression.
For now, take deep breaths to calm yourself down. Remember that every day is a new one--enjoy the little things!

Excersize and diet first. If that doesn't work, drugs. Not real drugs, just go to a doc and he/she can prescribe you some Zoloft or Celexa or something.
