i am an atheist but during talking to a friend i came across the thought that christian people always say there is just one god... but what about the one commandment "Thou shalt have no other gods before me.!" isn't that god admitting there are other gods????

A real god would not be obsessed that little ant like creatures worship him or not, by default what is it to him then pure annoyance

If that god would be for real the commandment would not even exist, one more proof that the bible was made by man

There is only one God. I believe I have been told that the commandment is against them making anything else equal to God or calling God by any other name (which is different from some religions which just flat out tell you to call God by whatever name you want and It'll still be listening).

There are historians who say that the early Hebrews were Henotheists (that is, they believed only one God was supreme, but that there were indeed other gods). It wasn't until later that there God also became seen as the universal God of all. As far as I know Jews still think this way. Atleast my Jewish friends all seem to say that everyone prays to the same God they do, they just have a special relationship (special covenant) with God as they are God's chosen people, those set aside to keep up the memory and remembrance of God. Atleast that is my understanding.

Blessings in Frodo!

A god is anything someone worships. A god can be your money, or your girlfriend or your car. Some say even that you can worship yourself as a god, yet usually most disagree with that idea because we all know our faults and we are with ourselves as we take a dump in the bog. So there is a difference between 1 true God and other gods. You can pick your god the 1 true God who has no brother no sister no cousin. Or you can pick another god of your choice, Barney if ya like.

Also the verse relative to the Eden fairytale when Jehovah is supposed to have said that man has become as ONE OF US, to know good and evil. [Genesis 3:22]

Christianity does a sidestep over these references to other deities, claiming it's a reference to the Trinity way back in Genesis or that "he didn't mean real gods, he meant things that could be worshipped" ... or he meant the us as himself and angels ... clearly not true. The fact of the matter is Jehovah was at one time considered one god in a hierarchy of many other gods. Jehovah was the god of storms, highly respected among the desert people who later saw Jehovah elevated by Moses (an Egyptian Atenist priest) to the god of the Jews.

There is just one God. He just has a hundred different names....and the commandments were put in there to scare people into the churches so the churches could get money. God is not jealous. He does not rage. Those things are human traits and God is not human. Humans have given him those traits. He is all knowing and all loving. How can someone all loving be hateful?

I am islamic and there is no god but god.One True god anyways. To my belief he does as he wills to test the will of mankind.Even the prophet muhamaad knew there were other gods. But they are not Allah.Allah isThe GOD that has no true form. But has a true being. It says in the quran, on the day of resurection, you will see THE GOD as one always imagined him.Even the followers of the prophet muhamaad(pbuh) during his time asked him, "will I see allah on the day of resurection."He replied"yes, as it is the truth you can see the moon on a clear night".The prophet muhamaad(pbuh) even talked about the other gods of earth. It states that on the day of resurection, the false dieties will denounce any worship of themselves.AND BY THE WAY.I did not believe in Allah until about 4 years ago.I am 23 now.If you do not believe, it is because he has not willed it yet.And don't confuse atheist with being agnostic.Atheist simply don't believe, while someone who is agnostic always knows in their hearts somehow there is a reason. That is what keeps you peacefull. And there was always a fealing there known or not by ones self that we just can't explain, so you contemplate.Giving thought. This is a good thing.PEACE-SALAM

Absolutely! We as Christians believe that there is one true "God". There are a gad zillion gods. The Golden calf in one example in the old testament. The rich man that wouldn't give up his wealth and follow Jesus was another example in the New Testament. You can worship anything. Money, power, people.
That doesn't make them I AM.
Hope that helps explain.
Be blessed, in Christ

In seeing some of the other respondants answers, I must say that My God is eternal. Football players and honoring my parents and teachers aren't going to save me from sin. ONLY God, through the blood of Jesus, has the power to save me from the pit of Hell. None other. period.

LOL! Caught! You a lawyer by any chance?

I may be wrong, but i think that line is said to mean, to treat no other object or creature as if they were the creator of heaven and earth and the universe. Which means it also extends to idolizing godlike pop stars, celebrities ( footballer players too ahem!),charismatic humans, even up to saints and sages!!!

That was what a pastor friend of mine told me when I asked him that. And no I aint a lawyer either hehe. That in itself raises another can of worms also.... where then does a person draw the line between respecting a person and "idolizing" a person... Because in the holy scriptures I believe they did mention to respect ones father on earth, coz if one cannot respect one's father on earth whom one can see, how then can one respect the father who is in heaven?

Can of worms: Does that mean if one shows deep respect for a teacher, a parent, an elder or even a kind person that one is Idolising someone else as god? ( ok maybe i should post this as a question as well ) hehe

In order to understand this commandment, you have to understand the context. During the time that God gave these, the Israelites and peoples of that time worshipped many idols. (Idols, in that time period, were false gods.) Putting this commandment in modern terms, God is simply saying, "Don't worship any false gods! Worship Me, the One and Only True God!"

No, GOD is not admitting that there are other gods in that sense, He's saying that we sometimes make things like gods instead of Him. Things like money, time, our possessions, even other people. There aren't really any pagan god beliefs anymore. What
that commandment is guarding us against is putting other things before our love of God.

no, people today have religons where there are may Gods, but Christians have only one God, he is not admiting there is more Gods, he is saying he is the only God, and should be the only one you worship. Back then, he knew how today's society would be like and he knew there were other religons. So he created that rule.
