This is not to criticise, but rather to give support to those who are having a hard time quitting. I have a friend who is and has offered some great online help I can share.

Think about that before you light up. This is my baby, she is fine now, but very lucky.

I hope there aren't any. Here's the low down on what smoking could do to pregnant mums.

Q.
I AM 17 WEEKS PREGNANT. I SMOKE 10 TO 15 CIGARRETTES A DAY. I WANT TO QUIT. IS IT TOO LATE TO QUIT OR HAS THE DAMAGE ALREADY BEEN DONE?

A.
It would be best to consult with your Dr. but from my experience it is not too late to quit. It is just a bit harder to quit while pregnant. Many Dr's just advise to gradually decrease your smoking to a few cigarettes a day. You can quit if you can do it gradually enough not to stress your unborn baby. The less Nicotine you take in the better it is for your baby so smoking just a few cigarettes a day is definitely better than 10 to 15 a day.

As far as affecting the birth-weight of your baby that remains to be seen. That depends largely on your nutritional status as a whole. From what research shows each time you smoke a cigarette it decreases the blood flow (and therefore oxygen) to your baby so the less frequently you cause this change in your body the better it is for your unborn baby. If you quit too quickly and you experience "physical" (not emotional, psychological) withdrawal symptoms it can stress to your baby.

I AM a pregnant smoker, I was the first time and still am the second. Its so stressful trying to quit but I suggest making her lower is down slowly, don't just go cold turkey. That can send not only her into withdrawl but also the baby, because the baby is also used to the nicotine. Its really important for her to try and at least cut back as much as possible, but tell her not to worry to much. There is alot of propaganda saying children of smokers are less intelligent or are born with dissabilities and thats just not true, yes they are at higher risk but its not nearly as bad as they say.

I'm embarrassed to say, but I smoked while I was pregnant. My doctor told me that I could smoke 6 cigarettes a day, of course it was about 1 pack a day. My son was low birth weight - just under 6 lbs. but healthy otherwise........did develop pneumonia at 3 months old, not severe.........I'm very thankful that he's grown and healthy, soon to turn 21. I hate to admit that I'm still smoking, he is also a smoker. I have to wonder if that's because he was exposed in utero or while growing up. I wish to God that I would have been able to quit, so if your friend can, she should try her hardest.............but at the same token, if it's going to make her absolutely crazy, insane, totally stressed and cause a miscarriage, maybe she can cut down.......I know this probably goes against all medical advice, but she, too has to live thru this pregnancy. Good luck to her.

Nope quit when I was pregnant.. that was the first sign to my pregnancies as I could not stand the smell of smoke and would puke. Your friend cant do the nicotine gums or patches either as that will go to the baby and when the baby is born, he/she will go through withdrawls same as a smoker would. What your friend could do is always sit with a glass of water. Everytime she gets the urge to smoke..start to sip on the water. by the time she is finished the water...it is the same time it would have took to smoke a cig. Also to flush nicotine out of her system which will help her quit faster.. take 8 oz of orange juice or another real citrus fruit juice like grapefruit or pineapple and mix with 1 tablespoon of cream of tartar powder. that will bind to the nicotine and she will pee it out in her urine. The lower nicotine levels in the body, the less she will smoke. Her body is used to a certain amount of nicotine so once her levels go down, so will her urges to maintain that high level. good luck

I think it's a terrible habit that could end up really hurting the baby inside of you, your friend, or whoever.

Read this link below... and see if that helps you quit or not.

I hope there aren't! Folks make a lot of choices in life, but smoking while pregnant is probably the worst one could ever make.
