If it hasn't been mentioned, do we need to follow the Japanese idea of pregnant women wearing badges on buses and trains to encourage others to give up their seats?

That idea is not a bad one but...practices are based on collectivism and uniformity in Japan. Those practices will not work here in the U.S.

Wear a badge if you are pregnant???? You have to be kidding. I would have never done that.

If I'm in public and see any person that seems elderly or disabled, I would always offer my seat anyway. A woman that is obviously pregnant and uncomfortable, I would offer my seat as well.

A mother juggling a baby and two bags of groceries - I would offer my seat as well.

No badge required.

It just promotes the idea that pregnancy is a disability. Why should we want that? Why not promote pregnancy for what it is? An endeavor to bring another life into the world. Why not look at pregnant women as working women doing the most important job ever? Same with mothers. Pregnancy and motherhood is so undervalued. It's no wonder there's hardly any prenatal care in this country and day care is at a premium.

They shouldn't have to wear a badge... anyone noticing should automatically get up... men AND women. I see the problem in this country in that we have more fat people than most other countries combined! How can we tell for sure if she's fat or pregnant? I will never give up a seat for a fat person... they should exercise and stand to burn calories. i have given up my seat every time for a lady regardless of whether she's pregnant or not and held doors for them. Some of the iron-bra chicks get ticked when I do that... LOVE IT!

Interesting. I didn't know they were doing that. Should the States follow suit? If a pregnant woman wants to wear a badge on public transportation, it probably should be offered. Will it work? I would hope so.

If they have to wear a badge to let people know they are pregnant then its not at the point were they are totally exhausted with carrying that bump round with them all day, I asked my young nephew to stand up recently on a bus to let a fairly into her pregnancy woman sit down and she just went totally off on one at both me and him for having the nerve to presume she needed a rest just because she was pregnant, bit of a poser there and don't know if I would allow my nephew to have to put up with rudeness like that again.

why would a pregnant woman need to wear a badge, you'd have to be blind not to notice a pregnant woman. people arent going to give up their seat regardless of a badge its down to the individuals respect for other people.

Err, pregnancy is a fairly obvious condition by the time you're going to want to sit down all the time. If people can't show common decency on their own, what's to say a badge is going to encourage it?

That would only encourage the "you're pregnant so you're fair game if I feel the need to touch your stomach and ask all sorts of personal questions and share info I shouldn't share will my own family" response. I'd never wear it.

They have special parking for people with children at the supermarket where I shop.. I park there and I don't have kids. There isn't any law against it - I just don't get why people with kids expect everybody to jump through hoops for them. It just gets me mad - that's why I park there - if it is the closest non-handicap spot.
