It's the combination of the two sometimes. When a person has bi-polar the moods can shift and the thought patterns can shift rather rapidly. When you see a loved one like this, it is almost impossible to get them to admit that they are having a problem and need help. My good friend had this same problem happen to her 2 yrs. ago. Her family and friends had a dickins of a time getting her help. Once they've reached a certain stage of not sleeping well and irrational thinking and acting, no amount of reasonable talking is going to help them see what is going on. It can be quite scary sometimes. Their admission into the hospital is usually a traumatic one, because they themselves don't know just how bad their condition is and how scary and frustrating their condition is through the eyes of their loved ones. It is not a pleasant thing to watch.

What is really wild about most mania episodes, is that once their calmed down and in the hospital, the person that went through all of that has no real memory of what he or she had done or said. But the ones around him or her remembers everything.

Good luck and I hope I was some what helpful!

Could be one or the other or some of both. To the Manic- at the time it's perfectly normal, actually, its super normal. Some may interpret the words or actions as nonsensical. But there is sense and logic behind it. The complication comes from too many thoughts and/or actions being entertained or implemented at once. The "high" is very rewarding and satisfying....kinda like being superhuman for the time it lasts. Lots of positive things could be accomplished, if channeled properly and under some semblance of control.

They can just not be making sense. But it's more likely if they aren't doing other acting out things, it could be a mixed episode. Sometimes, acting out can be subtle, like drinking or smoking more, or dressing a little sexier, or having more sex. It doens't have to be so obvious.
