When I lived in California, people refered to the police as 5-0 because they drove Ford Mustang 5.0 model vehicles. They are refered to that way all over the place. Not just Hawaii.

There was an old television series in the early seventies called Hawaii Five-O. It starred actor Jack Lord, whose hair never ever messed up with a sidekick detective nicknamed Dan-o.
