It can't be done. The pipe is 6m, he cuts off 2.75m, leaving a length of 3.25m then if he needs a 3.5m length he has to go buy another piece of pipe....

2 3/4 meters = 11/4 meters.
3 1/2 meters = 7/2 meters.
Find alike denominators.
11/4 can stay as it is.
7/2 can turn into 14/4.
So, 11/4 +14/4= 25/4 meters.
Now, turn it back to a regular fraction.
25/4 meters = 6 1/4 meters.
So, if he only bought 6 meters, and he cut 6 1/4 meters, then there was no pipe left over.

Um, 2 3/4 meters plus 3 1/2 meters equals 6 1/4 meters -- so if he only had 6 meters of pipe, he couldn't make the cuts you specified. Unless, of course, he cut off the 3 1/2 meter section first, then cut *that* section down to 2 3/4 meters...in which case he'd have 2 1/2 meters left :)

if its not a trick question : its impossible

if its a trick question:

he cuts off 2 3/4 meters plus 1 of 3 (or 1/3) 1/2 meters.

2 3/4 + (1/3)(1/2)
=2 3/4 + 1/6
=2 11/12

subtract this from 6 meters

= 3 1/12 meters

6 meters - 2 3/4 meters = 3 1/4 meters
then take that number and subtratc the next cut
3 1/4 - 3 1/2 = -1/4 meters

you wont have any pipe left

first add 2 3/4 and 3 1/2 m. together but in order to do that you need common denominators so 2 3/4 + 3 2/4 which equals to
6 1/4 which means that he used 1/4 more than he had

2006-08-03 02:37:16 · answer #8 · answered by pete 3 · 0 0

2 3/4 + 3 1/2 = 6 1/4

because 2+3= 5 and 3/4+1/2 = 1 1/4

so he has gone over by a 1/4 so the question is wrong

he comes out using 1/4 more than he has....
2 3/4 + 3 2/4 = 6 1/4 so he used more than he had purchased and ends up with -1/4 ...
