Something has artistic integrity when it communicates from some sense of personal honesty and truth; when the project (and the performer) speak from a real "need" to express something about our world and our lives. Conversely, a project that is conceived solely as an attempt to pander to the masses and/or to achieve monetary gain is probably lacking in artistic integrity.

That's not to say, by the way, that art (or artists) with integrity can't be material successes as well; it happens every day.
