What does it mean if someone says they
-Believe in God?
-Believe in UFO's?
-Believe in themselves?
-Believe in evolution?
-Believe in Science?
-Believe in kindness?

And when someone says that everyone 'believes in' something, in which sense do they mean? To believe something exists or to believe that something is good? Or to believe that you should devote your life to something?

How is it distinguished from 'believing that'--as in believing that the earth is spherical?

People say they 'believe in' things all the time and never really explain what they mean. So what do you think?

Varoon:
Can you also apply that concept to 'believing in UFO's or 'believing in oneself'?
And how exactly does 'believing in God' affect one's life?

to believe in is genreally to assume it is real. and by default assume it also means good. unless other wise noted.

Ex. I belive in aliens.... after all their the ones that took all my cows.

A belief in is internal, and oft times hard to have a person prove without relying on others.

The words 'believe' and 'belief' are etymologically related to the words 'live' and 'life' respectively. Therefore, to 'believe' in something is to live one's life - in thought, word and/or deed - as though the verity of the thing in question were certain.

Thus, for example, one who 'believes' in God lives his life in recognition of God's existence, meaning that his actions reflect this postulate in day to day life. Paying 'lip-service' to something, therefore, is not the same as 'believing' in it.
