My father-in-law is turning 70. He does not have any hobbies or activities that he participates in regularly. He enjoys reading and ocassionaly going to the casino. Any suggestions for birthday presents would be helpful!

Food! You can rarely go wrong with food!

I give my dad, who just turned 76, edible treats, and he loves it. Sometimes I go to Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s and put together a package of unique, healthy (he likes healthy) treats. Other times, I order the food to be delivered, like amazing treats from Zingerman’s in MI (http://www.zingermans.com).

Specific ideas include local wine, local chocolate, high quality nuts (like Virginia peanuts), baked goods, etc.

In fact, baking something yourself is another great idea. Perhaps you can find out his favorite cake, cookies, etc.

If he has dietary needs, it makes it even more fun! You could bake low-sugar treats, or non-dairy delights. He’ll be impressed with the personal touch! Wrap it in a bow, or decorate a basket, and you’re good to go!

A Gift certificate from the bookstore might be nice. If you know who his favorite authors are, check to see if they have come out with any new books. Maybe a new shirt. Maybe your husband could help in the idea department.

Take him out for a nice dinner, and also give him a gift certificate to a book store so he can choose his own reading material.
