Because when that phrase originated, people actually cared about other people's feelings, and tried not to offend anyone if they could help it. Now, no one cares. I constantly see questions and answers on here that are deliberately hurtful and hateful. People now are very selfish and feel they should have the right to say anything, regardless of who they may offend or hurt. While you may have the right to do it, you should be polite and civilized enough to NOT do it. Common courtesy has flown out of the window.

Edited to add: I agree that the phrase was used to prevent arguments. I have also heard abortion was added to the list. These seem to be the subjects that people are most passionate about, and the arguing can quickly get out of hand.

Because this is a subject that everyone has thoughts on and always will have thoughts on. We say never talk about it or bring these things up because of so many diff thoughts and feels others have and then you get deeper and deeper into the subject and the next thing you know you are upset with that person you are talking to.

I believe the saying is directed at conversations between friends and strangers. Colleagues who discuss topics of conversation, debate, and so forth are capable of discussing such issues without arguing or falling back on pointless name-calling. If they were never discussed, we could never get facts from any side in order to make our own decisions.

Because people's opinions vary so much and because people hold on to what they believe, discussions have become wars, feuds and fights/arguments with the opponents disturbed with each other forever. The advice is-so why risk what as a good relationship and cause it to be a strained one.

It can be interesting and they are two subjects that people feel strongly about and that engulf our moral views and show a n intellectual caring side to all of us. I know it is something that i get passionate about but if you are with someone that feels differently it can go PETE TONG so don't discuss it.

Because it's a very interesting subject, we all have different views, and some of us like a good debate rather than an argument.

They say we shouldn't do it only because it causes arguements. When two or more points of view are expressed, it's hard to accept what others have to say. But some things need to be said.

Because it's something we're personally very opinionated about, and we like the challenge of a good debate...
