It's not insane nor are men being punished. Matrilineal descent is used only to determine if a child is born a Jew. This is because of the understanding of biblical verses that intimate that it is the mother who has the greatest determinant in the child's moral and religious upbringing. Tribal association and inheritence rules are patrilineal.

Matrilineal descent is only used to determine who is a Jew, as someone stated, with all the rape and pillaging going on, that was a lot easier than determining fatherhood.

However, property rights and tribal affiliations (members of the leading classes) are passed on patrilineally instead. Women have their role in traditional Judiasm, but equality is not part of it. Men control and own everything.

Modern sects do involve equality of the sexes. Men aren't punished in any form.

Whether a child is Jewish depends on the mother. Whether the child is a Kohen, Levite of Israelite depends on the father.

It's not insane. Jewish men are not being punished.
