It all depends on your climate and or if you are able to house them indoors for a while.
If you live in the colder areas such as north, or north central and cannot keep them indoors, you should wait until late April or May
keeping in mind they will need aprox 4 months to maturity, there by being ready to endure the winter months out side.
Anytime is good for the warmer climates
They can be purchashed online, feed stores,TSC and other simaliar outlets, practically anywhere.

Depends on where you live. Here in New England, spring is best. We order them from a farm supply store and they usually arrive the last week of April. Other than that, you would probably have to get them from a farm. I've never had chickens shipped to me, but I have had finches and canaries shipped, and you usually loose a few in transit so try to keep your bird buying local if you can.
Good luck

Most people buy them in the spring, in the Midwest of the U.S.
You can also buy certain breeds year around.
Your local feed store sells them.
Also they're sold online.
I did a search on Google for baby chicks. There are many sites to order them from, and they also have care and instructions.

Live baby chickens??

Most chicken farms have orphan programs now. they give away mal chickens (which would normally be killed at birth)

Dead chickens for eating? Not sure the time of year matters when buying from the supermarket as it is all frozen anyway

Just look at the newspapers to find if Avian flu is in the air. If so, that's not the time you should go for buying chickens.
Rest of the year is fine. Trust me!
